[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-02-14 Summary: easy, informative read ... I really loved this book and finished it in record time. I often have trouble keeping interest in nonfiction books, especially ones about technology, but when I put it down I kept wanting to come back for more. Lots of interesting information presented in a straightforward way without jargon or convoluted explanations. I recommend it for everyone. ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-02-24 Summary: amazingly interesting book on coal- who would have thought? ... Very easy read and more interesting than you would have thought. It was a coffee table book at my in-laws house that I picked up and ended up taking home with me. I did return it when I was done. ...more
Editorial Reviews — ... Product Description | In this remarkable book, Barbara Freese takes us on a rich historical journey that begins hundreds of millions of years ago and spans the globe. Prized as "the best stone in Britain" by Roman invaders who carved jewelry out of it, coal has transformed societies, expanded frontiers, and sparked social movements, and still powers our electric grid. Yet coal’s world-changing power has come at a tremendous price, including centuries of blackening our skies and lungs—and now the dangerous...more

[3] Rating: 4 Date: 2003-05-02 Summary: Reminiscent of a teen hero pulp novel ... This is not a great book. The story is simple, the characters are clichéd, and the message hits the reader with the subtlety of a caveman's club. It is reminiscent of a teen hero pulp novel; a socialist "Red Planet" perhaps. Based on that assessment this book probably deserves two stars. On the other hand, Sinclair did do an effective job of researching and documenting the labor injustices of that era. Also, his writing style is remains remarkably fluid, even if it is not a showcase for the beauty of the English language. ...more
Editorial Reviews — ... Product Description | Hal stood looking at the cheering crowd. He had time to note some of the faces upturned to him. Pitiful, toil-worn faces they were, each making its separate appeal, telling its individual story of deprivation and defeat. Once more they were transfigured, shining with that wonderful new light which he had seen for the first time the previous evening. It had been crushed for a moment, but it flamed up again; it would never die in the hearts of men--once they had learned the power it gave....more

Coal Run
Customer Reviews — [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-09-18 Summary: Another GREAT read.... ... Backroads is one of my favorite all-time novels. Just finished Coal Run and it is just about as good! Tawni O'Dell is an awesome author whose characters are flawed and real and make you feel for them. You can't miss with an O'Dell book. Starting her third book, Sister Mine tonight! ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-06-21 Summary: Very Enjoyable ... I found this book very enjoyable. I found myself not wanting to put it down. It is the first of Tawni O'Dell's books that I have read and it made me want to read more of her work. ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-02-10 Summary: A Solid Second Book! ... I enjoyed this one quite a bit - just as much as her first, I think. It was a more straightforward story in a lot of ways. The narrator wasn't quite as charming as Harley, but the whole cast of characters was richer than _Back Roads_. There were some overlapping descriptions of the area, but that probably wouldn't even be noticeable had I not read them back-to-back. Dr. Morrison's character was really the first character of hers that I didn't like all that much. She just sort of bothered me and didn't seem to make ...more
Editorial Reviews — [1] ... Product Description | With her eagerly awaited second novel, Tawni O'Dell takes readers back to the coal-mining country of western Pennsylvania. Set in a town ravaged and haunted by a mine explosion that took the lives of 96 men, Coal Run explores the life of local deputy and erstwhile football legend, "The Great Ivan Z.," as he prepares for a former teammate's imminent release from prison. As the week unfolds and Ivan struggles to confront his demons, he reveals himself to be a man whose conscience is burdened...more
[2] ... Review | A poignant tale of a once-proud Pennsylvania coal town destroyed by a mining disaster, Tawni O'Dell's second novel, Coal Run , follows its wounded inhabitants as they try to come to terms with what is gone and what remains. "The Great Ivan Z"--Ivan Zoschenko--is a mythical football hero who, after being injured on the eve of a promising professional career, heads for Florida (and the bottom of the bottle) for a decade before limping back to Coal Run and getting a job as deputy sheriff. The novel spans...more

[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-02-21 Summary: An Appalachian Story ... I really enjoyed this book. It was a great story about Anneth and Easter, two sisters who are affected by their connection to the land and waters of Eastern Kentucky. I think if you are from the Appalachia South, you will love this book and its characters too. I think it is also important to note that Silas House is an activist against Mountain Top Removal, but you won't find anything in this book that is liberal activism. It just relates the love of the land by Appalachian people. You may want to read the trilogy ...more
[3] Rating: 4 Date: 2007-12-09 Summary: Compelling read ... It is amazing to me how Silas House can write so well from a woman's viewpoint. He was raised by some very strong women and it really comes through in his writing. His books have a love of place and family and community that is so indicative of Appalachian writing and yet have universal appeal as well, because of their themes of forgiveness, acceptance, and spirituality...and they always manage to rise above the pervasive negative sterotypes of the region. This story of two sisters who can't stand to live together ...more

Managing Decline: Japan's Coal Industry Restructuring and Community Response
Editorial Reviews — ... Product Description | For many years, coal formed the backbone of Japan's economic development, but the dangers and costs of mining became increasingly expensive for the industry and government. Global changes in coal production and exchange finally prompted Japan's decision in 1986 to shut down nearly all domestic coal mines in favour of coal imports. Japan's policy for industry restructuring had been applauded as one of the most comprehensive in addressing the needs of the industry, the workers and the community....more
